Dear Readers,

Today is my 12 year anniversary of not drinking alcohol. I was wondering if I’d even write here, as it doesn’t seem as important as it used to. I am not doing anything big to celebrate. (Maybe have extra ice cream.) Yet, it is important to let other people know it can be done, and you can be happier, saner, and free.

Addiction knows no boundaries, it doesn’t care how you vote, what gender you are, young or old, fat or thin, rich or poor. It only cares about itself. Here’s the tricky part; once you are addicted, you start to only care about yourself and where you will get your next drink.

I choose to be clear headed to see life as it is. There are times I’d like to escape, but now I just take a nap and read. Best escapes ever.

Mr. Untipsy and I reached 50 years of marriage in August. High school sweethearts, we started dating in 11th grade. That makes 57 years together. We have made exercise a priority, and continue to walk, bike, lift weights, and all the movement we can so we can stay mobile in our later years.

Walking outside and taking photos still is my mental health rock. Find your rock. Find what helps you keep out of yourself and out of over thinking.

So much to say about the state of the not so United States, and the turmoil it’s causing to our own people as well as all of you around the world. Even this, as stressful as it is, is not a reason to drink.

Each day I try to be kind, but strong in my convictions.

  9. It’s funny how we both thought we were going to write about our sobriety journey indefinitely. Neither of us kept it up! It seemed less important to write about life and more important to actually live it! Congratulations on your 12 years!
